To be eligible for the NPD-BC exam, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Who Can Apply?

  • 1Licensure: Hold a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United States or hold the professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country.
  • 2Education: Hold a bachelor's or higher degree in nursing.
  • 3Experience: Have worked as a registered nurse for at least two years full-time.
  • 4Practice Hours: Complete 2,000 hours of clinical practice in nursing professional development within the past three years.
  • 5Continuing Education: Obtain 30 hours of continuing education in nursing professional development within the past three years.
These requirements ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and practical experience necessary for certification.

NPD-BC Recertification

The Nursing Professional Development – Board Certified (NPD-BC) certification is valid for five years and must be renewed on or before your expiration date. Per ANCC Certification Renewal Requirements, eligibility includes:

  • Current certification: Hold a current ANCC NPD-BC certification that is eligible for renewal.
  • Active RN license: Hold a current, active RN license in a U.S. state or territory, or the professional legally recognized equivalent in another country.
  • Mandatory continuing education: Complete 75 continuing education contact hours (CE CH) directly related to nursing professional development during your 5-year certification period. At least 60 of the 75 hours must be formally approved continuing education.
  • Professional development category: Complete at least one of the eight ANCC renewal categories in its entirety (continuing education, academic credits, presentations, evidence-based practice/quality improvement project, publication or research, preceptor hours, professional service, practice hours, or assessment by examination). Practice hours are optional-if used, a minimum of 1,000 practice hours in the certification specialty is required.
  • Renewal fee: Submit your renewal application and pay the renewal fee through your ANCC online account before your certification expires.
