NI-BC Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the NI-BC exam, candidates must meet the following criteria:
Who Can Apply?
- 1Licensure: Hold a current, active Registered Nurse (RN) license in a U.S. state or territory, or the legally recognized equivalent in another country.
- 2Education: Hold a bachelor's or higher degree in nursing.
- 3Experience: Have the equivalent of at least two years of full-time RN practice.
- 4Continuing Education: Obtain 30 hours of continuing education in informatics nursing over the past three years.
- 5Clinical Practice: Meet one of the following practice hour requirements:
- A minimum of 2,000 hours in informatics nursing within the last three years; or
- A minimum of 1,000 hours in informatics nursing in the last three years and a minimum of 12 semester hours of academic credit in a graduate-level informatics nursing program; or
- Complete a graduate program in informatics nursing with a minimum of 200 hours of faculty-supervised practicum.

NI-BC Recertification
The Nursing Informatics - Board Certified (NI-BC) certification is valid for five years and must be renewed on or before your expiration date. Per ANCC Certification Renewal Requirements, eligibility includes:
- Current certification: Hold a current ANCC NI-BC certification that is eligible for renewal.
- Active RN license: Hold a current, active RN license in a U.S. state or territory, or the professional legally recognized equivalent in another country.
- Mandatory continuing education: Complete 75 continuing education contact hours (CE CH) directly related to nursing informatics during your 5-year certification period. At least 60 of the 75 hours must be formally approved continuing education.
- Professional development category: Complete at least one of the eight ANCC renewal categories in its entirety (continuing education, academic credits, presentations, evidence-based practice/quality improvement project, publication or research, preceptor hours, professional service, practice hours, or assessment by examination). Practice hours are optional-if used, a minimum of 1,000 practice hours in the certification specialty is required.
- Renewal fee: Submit your renewal application and pay the renewal fee through your ANCC online account before your certification expires.
